每到年底，各大出版社都會選出當年年度字，今年有哪些字上榜了呢？我們一起來看看！

一、polarization 兩極化

首先是權威級的韋氏字典 (Merriam-Webster) 選出的單字：polarization 兩極化。

可以看得出來，這個字的前半段就是我們熟悉的北極熊 polar bear 的 polar，有「極」或是「正好相反」的意思。而 polarize 則作為動詞用，代表「使兩極化」。

  • Political debates on social media during the 2024 U.S. election highlighted the growing polarization among voters.

二、brain rot 腦腐

再來是牛津大學出版社 (Oxford University Press) 針對現代人過度吸收低品質網路內容的現象所選出的流行詞 brain rot，中文通常翻為「腦腐」。

這個詞常出現在 Z 世代及 Alpha 世代網民的社群媒體留言中。

  • I need to take a break from doomscrolling; it’s giving me brain rot.
  • Brain-rot movies can be fun when you just need to turn your brain off and relax.

三、manifest 顯化

最後來一個正向的字 manifest，由大家熟悉的劍橋字典 (Cambridge Dictionary) 選出。這個字以流行用語來說，常被翻作「顯化」或「努力實現」。

  • She manifested her ideal career by combining positive thinking with persistent networking and skill-building.

或是名詞 manifestation 可以這麼用：

  • Through daily visualization and gratitude practices, she believes in the power of manifestation to achieve her dreams.
